Black People...Do We Know Who WE ARE?

What if the black race were a bed of roses and water was our sources of knowledge, what brand of water would we want to be quenched with?

In this flower bed we call life; we seem to focus on the beauty of the rose verses the brand of the water. Many of us have yet to understand the importance of what we “take in.” If knowledge is indeed power, then why is it that some of us, continue to gulp down tap water.

Have we forgotten who we are?

The outside world would like for us to think that we are not the Kings and Queens that our forefathers were.  I am here to say that  we are. We are not a race of people who are lazy, uneducated, flashy, ill willed, aggressive, bitter, or whores. We are people of character and determination.  Yet, sometime we express those qualities more proficient than any other race.  WE sometimes we forget the core of our being and sip on the sugar sweeten tap water and gain absolutely nothing to taste.

There was once a time where our people wanted so desperately the right to read, write, get married, vote, and just simply live in peace. It is almost a slap in the face to people like Marcus Garvey, Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B. Dubois, Medger Evers, Huey P. Newton, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, Bobby Seal, Nina Simone, and Stokely Carmichael, that we often times do not take advantage of our freedom. These leaders were turning the soils to grow a garden filled with blossoming and prosperous roses and SOME HOW weeds grew, destroying our flower bed.

People...remember who we are…stop allowing the gift of our civil rights be taken for granted. READ... VOTE…EDUCATE...LOVE…LIVE! Contact me at lorie@isispages.com

See below as to WHY I WROTE THIS ARTICLE...WHEN did events like prom become a mockery...when did we lose our class to show our ass...what are we teaching our young people . There is a time and a place for everything... if one of these young people are in relation to you...my apologies...but know that...this is inappropriate attire for a formal or any sort of black tie or after five function....and we had nerve to get mad at Bill Cosby for spitting some real sh&t!!!! (exhaling)

I wish our black people will wake up. They don't want to listen, they they don't want to know. They just want to be in the now of what everybody else is doing and what people on tv are doing. I want so badly to think that we will change and get better but everytime I think we might make it I here something like; a house on the west side of town has been shot up because somebody stepped on on somebody's shoes and disrespected them. It makes me lose hope and I start hating my own people and I hate that I do that but that's how I feel sometimes.

I hate to see my people looking and acting so stupid! WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? I wish my daughter would even look at a dress like that! I'll slap her so hard she would'nt know which way to turn! We have to instill class and respect in our children. I'm a young mother. I had my daughter at 19 and even though I was a child with a child I still taught her all that my old time country mother taught me and that's to carry myself like a young lady and act like I have some damn class about myself. I feel sorry for all of them because they have no clue as to how hard this life is to be black. You have to be very careful how you dress and where you hair. I work in coporate american and I am the one of the only 2 black people in my department and I even looked like a crazy nigga or talked like a crazy nigga then I would not have this job. LIFE IS ABOUT TO SLAP THEM IN THE FACE AND IT WILL BE TOO LATE TO TEACH THEM SOMETHING THEY SHOULD ALREADY KNOW AND THAT'S HOW TO DRESS, WALK, TALK, RESPECT THEMSELVES AND PEOPLE AROUND THEM.

Though this is shameful behavior, we are all a product of our environment. No decent, level headed parent would allow their children to dress so inappropriately. This article is great because it allows this type of dialogue to take place. Sometimes we don't know how ridiculous we are until someone brings it to our attention. Hopefully, these types of discussions will help us to see the error in our ways.

Before we go pointing fingers we must step back and take a look at self. Children are a reflection of their parents and their surroundings. If we don't step up and start leading by example the only person to blame is self. Kids are like sponges soaking up everything they see and hear. As adults it is our job to step in and filter out the impurities.

I have two lil girls and I would never let them make a fool out of themselves when it's time to pick out a prom dresses.
I'm wondering if this was a contest.
* Who could show the most skin?
* How colorfull your dress/suite is?
* Worst dress/suite.

As my grandmother would say to us.
"First impression is the last impression so make sure you are alway ready."

Stop it! they look beautiful. You would not know a flower if you saw one
Well I would never why because they don't look like you.
It is the prom and yes it is a time to be seen. I see nothing distasteful about the clothes.
Consider this… They are all colorful characters for one night. They are playing dress up….Imaginative, it does start somewhere.
Who is to say that they dress like this all the time?
Prom is not the boardroom or classroom. Get some WD40 and relax yourself.
Get up off the parents, it is not always their fault, Hate is such a strong word and should only be used when Referencing the devil. LOVE our KIDS

Redtree, Its one thing to love our kids and love them for being expressive, but there a fine line between expression and what's right and wrong. This attire is not right. I agree with the author. And even if this was a prom competitiion, whatever ghetto ass teacher thought of this outta be smacked. This is not something you teach your children to do. You must have let your baby wear some riduclousness like this.

Kids don't have money, parents do. This goes back to parents and grandparents who just decided on giving up on the next generation for a 40 ounce.

I am so glad that you wrote this article. I for one am at fault to for some things such as not reading ( I hate reading the newspaper it is so depressing). And when I do read it's always something fiction-harly ever anything dealing with the real. But like you said, we easily forget how our ancestors were kings and queens and how we were stripped from that, to come to an unknown land to build it up and recieve nothing in return. I love my people, and like you I wish we would remember where we came from and what people had to go through for us to have a chance at actually living, freely. But by writing this article you have taken the step to educate. Thanks.

PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!! I am so tired of our race always talking about one another, judging those of us who do not have the same level of monetary things, knowledge, stregnth, and understanding. When do we quit talking about it and be about it! When do we start talking about how we can implement a plan to stop the negative cycle that's impacting our children! Obviously these children had a negative influence, yet GROW ASS ADULTS come to a website to put them down!! You all our no better than those outfits you disgrace!!

I totally agree with what Ray said, Kids are indeed a reflection of their parents.....Parents should be teaching their children, values and discipline. One might ask, "Where does that start?" It starts at HOME......We as people of color should love on our children, teach them to RESPECT themselves!!! Use good judgement, cover-up and leave some room for imagination. Don't always be loud, sometimes we should just sit back, listen and absorb.....
